In Mauritius, all Government primary schools use English as medium of instruction.  Primary schooling starts at the age of 5 and students follow a six-year programme leading to a Certificate of Primary Education after a national examination.

A number of fee-paying, private schools follow the French or the English model of education.

French is a compulsory subject taught at primary level.
